New acting FCC chairman: More competitive telecom industry?

Michael Copps will be our country’s acting FCC chairman, and Cory Communications is watching the news with great anticipation.

The appointment was made on January 22. Copps will serve as interim chairman until a replacement is nominated and approved. The permanent nominee is rumored to be Julius Genachowski, a practicing attorney, including at the FCC, and technology entrepreneur who has personally faced current FCC regulations as he built businesses.

Acting chairman Copps is no newcomer to the FCC and is known for his commitment to the public interest. He started on the Commission in 2001 and was nominated for a second term in 2005.

We expect the FCC to adopt a pro-competition direction, under both Copps and the new chairman. This competition will most assuredly translate to benefits for you, our clients:

  • Lower and more competitive pricing
  • Greater choice of providers
  • Continued innovation of new services and features

And here’s why this is likely to happen:

  • The agency is sure to place more weight on access rates and to scrutinize forbearance requests (1996 Telecom Act) – just two factors that have at points not served the small competitive industry so well.
  • For enterprises and small businesses, access rates and forbearance can carry profound impacts, leaving businesses with fewer choices for Internet, phone, wireless and other communications services – and this is likely to change.
  • Just as important, some believe that regulatory influence will move away from the traditional players such as the large telephone companies towards non-traditional players, reflecting diverse interests and ideas.
  • Still others believe that future mergers of large telephone companies may not be as readily approved, resulting in a more competitive and less consolidated industry.
  • Significant changes are already planned including broadband installation in underserved areas and transition to digital TV.

Copps has stated that he will not make policy changes and expects the new chairman to take on this role, but he already appears to be steering the FCC towards greater competition.

Regardless of when changes take place, Cory Communications anticipates that we wil deliver benefits of an increasingly competitive telecom environment to our clients.

Is your current phone system hardware putting you at financial risk?

More than ever before, Cory Communications is advising clients to consult with us before investing a single cent into their existing phone systems. Here’s why.

Today’s economy is putting an enormous strain on many telephone equipment makers because of a slow-down in global demand.

Some analysts predict an increase in bankruptcies and mergers. Take Nortel’s bankruptcy news last month, and lay-offs announced last week by NEC, another industry giant. Experts report that Nortel, once so highly regarded, may have financial problems too severe for it to recover or survive.

Cory cautions all our clients, whether you’re in New Jersey or in California, not to invest in equipment that may become obsolete. We are also warning against investing in upgrades, add-ons or repairs, or re-upping on your maintenance contract without talking to us first.

Because of the potential up-tick in telecom bankruptcies and financial cut-backs, firms may unknowingly spend on equipment that will not be viable long-term.

Whether you have a traditional PBX telephone system or a hosted IP solution, we can help you.

Cory Communications has established relationships with leading equipment providers in the area and across the country.

  • It’s our job to help you analyze, price, select and implement any new phone system solution.
  • It’s also our job to follow industry trends, and alert you to any red flags we may have heard about your current system provider.
  • In many cases, it is more cost effective to replace your existing equipment than to invest in repairs.

If you are considering an expansion or upgrade of your telephone system, please call us at 1-877-489-8186 or send an email to info@corycommunications.com. When it comes to telecommunications, we are here to help you make sound decisions.

What does Hopeworks do? Why does Cory Communications want to help?

It’s not often we find an organization that needs help and is so closely aligned with our own values and interests. But, that’s exactly what happened to us at Cory Communications when we discovered Hopeworks ’N Camden.

You might remember that Cory made a holiday donation to Hopeworks on behalf of our clients.

Here’s why we selected Hopeworks and why we are so supportive of this great organization.

First and foremost, Hopeworks is tackling the enormous challenge of helping at-risk youth in Camden. This organization encourages young people aged 14 – 23 to learn and develop skills, enhance self-esteem and become self-sufficient. Most importantly, Hopeworks is succeeding.

The philosophy behind Hopeworks’ success is something Cory can identify with, and that’s what makes our support so strong.

Here are three examples:

  1. Belief in teamwork: Cory’s entire business is built on teamwork among our clients, our partners and so many others.

Hopeworks LIVES through teamwork. The youth themselves, the staff and so many others work as a community to empower the young participants to succeed.

  2. Foundation in technology: Cory believes in a world of technological innovations to create telecom solutions for our clients.
Hopeworks embraces technology 100% as a way for youth to learn, gain practical skills, build self-confidence and get jobs. Website design, computer networking and repair and geographic information services are three of the technology skills participants learn.

  3. Goal setting: Every business knows how critical it is to set realistic goals and make plans to achieve them.

Hopeworks bases it’s entire organization on an acronym called D.R.E.A.M.S.* The organization helps youth identify goals and take immediate steps towards achieving them.

Teamwork, technology and goals; they’re commitments many businesses like to preach. Hopeworks truly LIVES these commitments – and our shared beliefs are what make Cory Communications so determined to help.

In the fall of 2009, Hopeworks plans a residential alternative for its youth. We at Cory will be there to support this plan.

If you have the opportunity to visit Hopeworks, provide support, or open your door to internship possibilities, please consider doing so. Hopeworks’ number is 856-365-HOPE. The address is 543 State St. Camden, NJ 08102
