Before the end of the year, you could be making some of your
telephone calls over the Internet instead of a phone line!
It's the latest in the communications revolution and one that
should result in significant cost savings.
Basically, you can make calls directly from your computer.
Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) converts a telephone's
voice signal into a digital signal that travels over the Internet
and allows you to speak to anyone with a regular phone number.
As VoIP technology evolves, voice, data and images will combine
to provide personal TV-like connectivity with each other.
To use VoIP, you will need a broadband (high speed Internet)
connection. Using an adaptor to connect to the Internet, you
merely pick up the phone and dial the number as you're used
to doing. However, VoIP users don't even need a telephone
if they hook up a microphone to their computers and send their
voices through their computers. Ask your children; they are
doing it now via their playstations.
VoIP is best utilized by large companies, particularly those
which operate from multiple locations. The technology should
not be regarded as a replacement for traditional telephone
service, but as an add-on which can:
- lower rates, both domestic and international;
- eliminate excess lines and their related costs, and
- simplify billing.
Best of all, with Internet access, VoIP allows you to communicate
from anywhere in the world.
Despite all of its advantages, VoIP does have a downside.
VoIP will not work during power outages; it does not connect
with 911 emergency centers, and it may not offer white page
listings.
Right now, the practicality for a business to use this service
comes with a cost. Your phone system must be VoIP-enabled
– most currently are not and the upgrade may not outweight
the advantage. Most VoIP applications now in use are designed
for intra-company calling. Multiple sites linked together
for data services are using existing lines to send voice calls.
